On Saturday 12th March, 234 pioneer students matriculated at the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo State. The first of its kind in Nigeria and 2nd in Africa. As stated by the Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko in his address at the varsity opening ceremony, the construction of the University “is a strategic response to reverse the ‘brain drain’ in Nigeria’s medical industry and to create an institutional base for the production of highly-trained and proficient health care man power to service our ever-growing population”.
He further added that the University was established to provide steady supply of experts in all fields of medicine for all health care institutions; deepen and sustain Ondo State globally-acclaimed achievements especially in the reduction of infant and maternal mortalities and lastly to stem the tide of medical tourism to foreign countries and make Ondo State, the new destination of choice for Nigerians and other African countries since it has estimated that about 30,000 Nigerians spend over ₦250 billion on medical tourism annually.
Academicians, traditional rulers and distinguished politicians were present at the opening ceremony to rejoice with Ondo State on the milestone achievement.
