It was a beautiful and colorful day at the State Capitol Building on Tuesday, March 22. Over 14 African Countries were represented as Sen. Donzella James (D – Atlanta) who sponsored Senate Resolution 1218 to name Tuesday, March 22, 2016 as African Diaspora Day at the state Capitol was joined by several people from different African countries. In celebration of the resolution, Sen. James hosted “A Taste of Africa in the Diaspora: Showcasing the Rich Heritage and Culture of the African Diaspora”.
The mission of the event was to “promote relationship for mutual interest, urging the Department of Economic Development to promote and strengthen mutually beneficial ties with nations of Africa.” As stated by one of the event coordinators/ moderators, Queen Blessing Itua (Chief of Staff, International Adviser for Georgia Senator Donzella James), when addressing the invitees, the event was also organized to create a networking platform for African citizens living in Diaspora.
Some of the African countries represented at the event include Cameroon, Congo, Cote D’Ivoure, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia etc.
Present at the event was Georgia State Governor- Nathan Deal, Senator Donzella James (D), several Representatives and Senators.
African Heritage was showcased in the multi national foods served, the colorful attire adorned by different attendees, African beads etc.
